How is AI used in mechanical assembly — for a gas-box team?

Short answer: "AI in assembly" covers many jobs. Visual inspection, cobot programming, single-part generative topology and CAD sketch copilots are real — and different from what MST does today. MST's current focus is assembly generation from controlled engineering inputs into a native SOLIDWORKS assembly.
Different jobs, different tools
| AI job | Typical output | MST focus today? |
|---|---|---|
| Visual inspection / defect detection | Pass/fail or annotated image | No |
| Robot / cobot programming aids | Motion or program hints | No |
| Generative topology (single part) | Lightweight solid for one part | No |
| CAD copilots that draft sketches | Suggested features or sketches | No |
| Assembly from controlled inputs | Native editable .SLDASM | Yes |
For what AI can and can't do inside that last job, see the existing post [What can AI do in assembly design today](https://community.mst-us.ai/community/t/23-what-can-ai-do-in-assembly-design-today-and-what-can-t-it-do) — this post does not repeat that table.
What "controlled inputs" means for a gas box

P&ID gas-line diagram + approved PDM parts + equipment rules → native, editable SOLIDWORKS assembly, starting with semiconductor gas equipment ([product page](https://mst-us.ai/product/)).
1. Recover intent from the gas-line diagram; build a directed engineering graph.
2. Bind approved PDM identity, revision and interfaces — do not invent qualified valves, MFCs, blocks or fittings.
3. Couple layout and routing under hard constraints; select against customer-approved objectives.
4. Execute a native .SLDASM and read it back (components, mates, rebuild state, flagged gaps).
5. Engineer reviews, edits and releases. No autonomous production release.
Why this lands for a gas-box team
Gas sticks and gas boxes repeat: same part families, written bend and access rules, vaulted revisions. That is where controlled generation pays off. A new equipment category still needs its own libraries, rules and validation. Free tools such as Drawing to BOM, BOM Compare and DrawingDiff can help with drawing and BOM checks alongside the workflow.
