When SOLIDWORKS mate errors point back to how the assembly was built

Short answer: many mate failures are not "SOLIDWORKS being difficult." They come from how the assembly was authored — copied mates from last year's job, missing interface data, or an imported solid with no mates. Fix tutorials still apply; the build method decides how hard the fix is.
Three common sources
| Source | What you open | Typical mate symptom |
|---|---|---|
| Copied-from-last-job assembly | Pack and Go of a prior stick or box | Broken refs, leftover mates, over-defined tree |
| Missing interface data | Parts without stable mate faces / ports | Guessed coincident mates that flip or fail |
| Imported dumb solid | STEP or similar with no mates | No mate tree — rebuild means remating by hand |

What a controlled build changes
P&ID gas-line diagram + approved PDM parts + equipment rules → native, editable SOLIDWORKS assembly, starting with semiconductor gas equipment.
Approved PDM parts carry identity and interface intent. Written rules constrain layout and routing. The output is a native .SLDASM you can open, inspect and edit — not a remate-from-scratch solid.
Review checklist when you open a generated .SLDASM

1. Components match diagram tags and PDM identity (part number, revision).
2. Mates rebuild clean; no unexplained over-defined nodes.
3. Unresolved or unverified items are flagged — not guessed away.
4. Engineer edits access, clearances or a flagged gap, then releases in PDM.
MST reopens the assembly and reads back configured checks. Engineers retain design and release approval. Free tools such as Drawing to BOM, BOM Compare and DrawingDiff help with drawing and BOM checks; they do not replace mate review.
