Why does equipment design need a native SOLIDWORKS assembly?

Short answer: a solid that looks right is not enough. You need mates you can edit, part numbers and revisions that survive, and an assembly you can keep designing in SOLIDWORKS and release through PDM.
What "native" actually means
A native .SLDASM is not a screenshot of geometry. It carries:
- Component identity from your vault (part number, revision, configuration)
- Mate references that rebuild when a part changes
- Configurations you can still switch
- A path back into PDM for check-in and release
A STEP or other dumb-solid handoff usually gives surface geometry only. You can view it. You cannot continue design the same way.
How a controlled assembly is built

P&ID gas-line diagram + approved PDM parts + equipment rules → native, editable SOLIDWORKS assembly, starting with semiconductor gas equipment ([product page](https://mst-us.ai/product/)).
1. Recover intent from the gas-line diagram (tags, connections, flow).
2. Bind approved PDM parts — identity, revision, interfaces — not regenerated catalog solids.
3. Couple layout and routing under hard constraints (interfaces, collision, bend rules, access, mounting, safety).
4. Compile and execute a native .SLDASM, then read it back.
5. The engineer inspects, edits, and releases. No autonomous production release.
Why mate troubles point here
Mate errors often show up after a Pack and Go of last year's job, after references break, or after someone imports a solid with no mates at all. Those are symptoms of how the assembly was built. A native assembly built from approved interfaces gives mates you can open, rebuild and fix — which is what the mate how-tos assume:

Free tools such as Drawing to BOM, BOM Compare and DrawingDiff help with drawing and BOM checks; they are not the assembly deliverable.
